Reading:

This year our reading program will focus on the Common Core Standards. We will ask students to work with a variety of texts. Students will read texts multiple times to become familiar with them.  Students will become familiar with finding evidence in the text to support their claims. Students will be encouraged to write responses using Evidence based terms such as " it stated in paragraph 7" or "according to the text" when they are writing answers to questions or discussing what they have read.

We will also implement Close Reading Protocols to help students learn strategies to break down complex texts.

Your student will dig deeper into the themes and meanings of text. They will question the author's purpose and begin to analyze and understand what they read.

Students will be required to read 60 minutes a week. This reading can be started on the weekend before the week. They can read the required minutes over a few days or in one night. All of the minutes they read in class and at home will be logged on the same reading log. This will allow the students and teachers to track data on their reading habits. The assignment is flexible to allow time for other scheduled activities.

To help your student better understand what they read ask them questions!

 Writingpen
This year we will be working through the writing process with our new Writer's Workshop program. We will be exploring the writing process in its entirety. We will focus on four different types of writing: Narrative, Opinion, and Informationsal Writing. Students will have the opportunity to write on a variety of topics that they choose in their Writer's Notebook. We will be writing every day in class and they may have homework ocationally.
