For the week of September 19th, 2016 Mr. Weller’s class will be doing the following:

In Reading, we will be reading our first selection, Dear Mr. Winston. (Journeys p.227) We will be practicing summarizing, as well as forming conclusions and generalizations.   We will continue our weekly reading homework which consists of reading for 15 minutes per night and writing two reading-response journal entries per week. (due on Friday) Look for a journal response copybook to come home Monday night. (There is no reading log this year!) There will be an open book vocabulary quiz on Thursday, and an open book test on Friday.

The vocabulary words are:

fault, borrow, reference, fainted, genuine, local, apologize, proof, slimy, insisted

In Writing, We will continue Writer’s Workshop with lessons on collecting ideas and developing characters. There will be a 10 minute “free writing” homework assignment Monday through Thursday

In Social Studies, we will continue chapter 14, Our Country’s Government. As with reading, we will be doing our vocabulary work in school. We will be learning how to read and use flow charts. There will not be any Social Studies homework this week. The Lesson 1 vocabulary words are:

Federal, Constitution, republic, legislative branch, executive branch, judicial branch*, checks & balances*, veto*

(*this week’s words)

In Math, We will continue chapter 1 on Place value. We will use place value to help us with rounding numbers, renaming numbers as multiples of 10, adding, and subtracting. Expect homework Monday through Thursday.

Spelling- Although we do have a spelling list for each story, we will not be giving spelling homework or spelling tests this year. Instead, students will be working with spelling words as part of Writer’s Workshop, Problem of the Day, and word study. All work will be done in school.
